We ask that you wear pioneer style clothing on Trek.
We ask you to maintain the standards in For The Strength of Youth.
Pioneer clothing will have a direct impact on the spirit of our trek. Below you will find descriptions for men’s and women’s clothing. It will help you as you plan what you will wear on our trek.
Dresses or Skirts: Dresses or skirts should reach the midcalf or above the top of your trek shoes so you avoid the risk of tripping while pushing and pulling handcarts, with bloomers or shorts, leggings, hospital pants, we recommend moisture wicking hiking pants.
Blouses: If wearing skirts, ideally, young women’s blouses should be lightweight and long-sleeved (Bright colors excluding neon were popular, especially bright yellow).
Pants: Comfortable, loose-fitting pants are recommended. Colors included blue, black, gray, and browns, especially beige and tan. Fabrics that dry fast and wick away moisture are ideal. No denim please.
Shirts: Lightweight, long-sleeved buttoned shirts. These were worn loose during this time period. Plain colors were most common, but stripes or plaids were also used. For modern day trek participants, light colors will be coolest.
Both Young Men & Young Women
Hats are strongly recommended. Bonnets are not required for the sisters. Wear something that will protect your face and neck from the sun as much as possible. Straw and moisture wicking sun hats in neutral colors are good choices. No ball caps please.
Socks: To help reduce the likelihood of blisters, participants are encouraged to wear (1) walking or hiking shoes that are broken in and (2) two pairs of socks at a time. Ideally the inner sock is thin and synthetic, while the outer sock is wool or a wool blend. Socks that wick away moisture are the most helpful. Socks that are a wool-synthetic blend can also help reduce the potential for blisters. To help protect from sun and insects, participants are encouraged to wear long sleeves, wide-brimmed hats or bonnets, and sunglasses.
